Grants & Awards

APGO is proud to sponsor award programs that play a major role in the advancement of health care for women.

Over the years, these endowments have helped APGO further faculty development, educational research activities, innovative new curricula and an outstanding collection of women's health care publications.

APGO Awards
APGO makes these awards available through generous contributions from members and friends of APGO and members of the APGO Corporate Liaison Council. Only two awards will be given in 2009 - the APGO Resident Scholars Awards and the APGO Martin L. Stone, MD Award Fund for the Advancement of Medical Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. APGO/Abbott Medical Education Award Program...Up to $15,000
Funds a significant educational project within a department of ob-gyn

APGO Resident Scholars Awards...$1000 each for up to 8 scholars
Covers travel and hotel expenses for six third or fourth-year residents to attend the CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting, to be exposed to the activities and benefits of APGO at an early stage in their careers

APGO/Ortho-McNeil Faculty Development Award...up to $15,000
Funds an educational project of an established faculty member within a department of ob-gyn

APGO Martin L. Stone, MD Fund for the Advancement of Medical Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology
(This award criteria has changed.)The award now provides financial support for projects that expand the educational capabilities and/or measurably enhances the educational programs initiated by graduates of the APGO/Solvay Scholars Development Program.

APGO/Wyeth Career Achievement Award...$10,000
This award recognizes an individual who has made noteworthy contributions within the specialty of ob-gyn and medical education.

APGO Excellence in Teaching Award
The APGO Excellence in Teaching Award was established in 1992 to recognize outstanding teachers in ob-gyn medical education. Since, 1,867 physician educators have received this prestigious award - a 3" bronze medal.

Past recipients (from 2002-2007) of the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award may order ONE of the new Excellence in Teaching lapel pins at a cost of $5 each. Shipping and handling is included. Please complete the order form and fax or mail it to APGO.

Recipients names are announced annually in a Fall edition of The APGO Reporter and in the APGO Annual Report.

APGO Web Site Awards of Excellence
This award, presented annually, acknowledges a Web site that provide outstanding and innovative content for use by medical students in the context of their clerkships, and by student interest groups, as well as other relevant curricula.

APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program
This program is a comprehensive educational curriculum designed to help ob-gyn professors teach women's health more effectively. The program’s purpose is to provide interested faculty, who have major teaching responsibilities, with a vigorous curriculum addressing aspects of the educational process. Through a combination of didactic sessions, independent study, and projects supervised by course faculty and local mentors, graduates will be taught instructional theory, research design, curriculum design, multiple instructional formats and other tools necessary to be leaders in ob-gyn education.

The 2010 program application is available, with a submission deadline of July 10, 2009.
All applications must be complete when submitted.
With your application, you must include:
    1. Current Curriculum Vitae
    2. Statement of Support signed by your chair
    3. Separate cover letter from your chair stating what he/she expects the value of 
       your participation will be to the university/or institution. 
    4. A personal statement indicating why you want to participate in this course, a   
       statement of agreement to complete course requirements, and how you intend to
       use the knowledge and skills gained from this experience.

If you do not have all of the required components, your application will not be considered. Facsimiles will not be accepted. Applications must be received in the APGO office no later than July 10, 2009, to be considered. Return application and required documents to:

APGO Surgical Scholars Program
This program's purpose is to refine the teaching skills of ob-gyn faculty who teach and evaluate learners in hysteroscopic surgery. This innovative two and one-half-day course presents state-of-the-art teaching strategies and evaluative tools, and will provide the scholar with a comprehensive curriculum that can be implemeted at their home institution.

The deadline for the 2009 program is May 1, 2009.

APGO Surgical Scholars Program Task Force

APGO Community-Based Educators Scholars Program
This program was designed for volunteer, clinical, site director and community faculty members. The second seminar was held following the 2009 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on sessions, the program provided instructional tools in teaching and evaluation that allowed participants to increase their expertise and gain resources to stimulate the next generation of physicians.

Non-APGO Awards

ACOG/Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Research Award in Long Term Contraception
This $25,000 award is intended to provide seed grant funds to a junior investigator for clinical research in the area of non-daily contraception, such as proper use and administration, factors affecting patient acceptance and compliance, and non-contraceptive benefits.  The award also includes a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG/Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Research Award on Female Sexual Dysfunction
This $25,000 award is intended to provide seed grant funds to a junior investigator for clinical research in the area of female sexual dysfunction with a special interest in the areas of hypoactive sexual desire disorder, female orgasmic disorder and female sexual arousal disorder.  The award also includes a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG Community Service Award
ACOG has established the Community Service Award to recognize a Fellow or Fellows who are currently or recently actively involved in a community program which is designed to help underserved or poorly served patient populations within the geographical confines of the district. Each District establishes its own selection process and submits their nominee for consideration to the Committee on Honors and Recommendations. Following committee review, the nominations are recommended to the Executive Board. Each winner receives a $500 honorarium plus free registration to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG Fellowship in the History of American Obstetrics and Gynecology
One Fellowships of $10,000 will be awarded for one year.  The recipient of the fellowships spends one month in the Washington, DC, area working full-time to complete their specific historical research project.  Although the fellowship will be based in the ACOG History Library, the recipient is encouraged to use other national historical and medical collections in the Washington, DC, area.  The results of this research must be disseminated through either publication or presentation at a professional meeting.

ACOG/Kenneth Gottesfeld-Charles Hohler Memorial Foundation Research Award in Ultrasound
This foundation supported grant funds junior investigators to support research or advanced training that is ultrasound specific and dedicated to a practical clinical use in a new or unique approach. One grant of $10,000, or two grants of $5,000, will be provided at the discretion of the review committee. In addition, the award will provide the recipient with a travel expense allowance of $1,000 to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG/Hologic Research Award for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer
This $15,000 award was established to provide seed grant funds to a junior investigator to support clinical research in the area of cervical cancer prevention. The award's purpose is to provide the opportunity to advance knowledge in the area of cervical cancer prevention.  The award also includes a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG/Eli Lilly and Company Research Award for the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis
This $15,000 award is intended to provide seed grant funds to a junior investigator for clinical research in the area of osteoporosis. The award's purpose is to advance our knowledge in the areas of prevention and treatment in osteoporosis. The award also includes a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG/Merck US Human Health Research Award on Adolescent Health Preventive Services
A $15,000 research grant for the purpose of providing ACOG Junior Fellows or Fellows the opportunity to advance knowledge on issues related to prevention in adolescent health.  Specifically to develop and test strategies in the following suggested areas: to incorporate young adolescents into ob-gyn practice for the ACOG recommended initial adolescent reproductive health visit (ages 13-15) and on-going preventive care at all ages; to provide clinical preventive services such as immunization and screening; and to provide health guidance and counseling to both adolescents and parents on issues such as sexual behavior, tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, safety, weight and exercise. The award also carries a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.

ACOG/Merck US Human Health Research Award on Immunization
This $15,000 grant was established to provide ACOG Junior Fellows or Fellows the opportunity to advance knowledge on issues related to immunization in the obstetrician/gynecologist practice. Topics of interest include, but are not limited t  Immunization history of patients; Frequency of immunization of patients by an ob/gyn; Incidence of infectious diseases preventable by immunization; Prohibitions to immunizations in ob/gyn patients; Pregnancy and immunization; Ob/gyn patients interest in immunization; and, any other related area. This award also carries a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.


ACOG/Ortho Women's Health & Urology Academic Training Fellowships in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Two stipends of $30,000 each were developed to provide opportunities for especially qualified ob/gyn residents or Fellows to spend an extra year involved in responsibilities that will help train them for academic positions in the specialty. A most important part of this award is to carry out an investigation project of a sort which will lead to a publication. This investigation may be in the area of basic research but is not limited to this and may include studies in the broader aspects of the discipline such as teaching and the delivery of health care.  These awards also carry a $1,000 travel stipend for the winners to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.


ACOG/Roy M. Pitkin Award
ACOG established the Roy M. Pitkin Award which recognizes outstanding research published in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Each year, a distinguished panel of former members of the editorial board will select the top four articles. An unrestricted award of $5,000 will be given to the department from which the research came.


Warren H. Pearse/Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Women's Health Policy Research Award
This $15,000 award was developed to support research in health care policy. The research should be about an aspect of policy that either defines, assists or restricts the ability of the physician to deliver health care to women in general or in a specific area. This award also carries a $1,000 travel stipend for the winner to attend the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.


Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Section Award
An annual award for the most outstanding Section activity, the honor includes a cash prize of $5,000, a certificate presented to the Section Chair, and paid expenses for travel to the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting.
