RESOURCES FOR CLERKSHIP DIRECTORS

APGO Meetings
As part of our efforts to further understanding of ob-gyn and women's health care issues, APGO holds two major educational seminars each year. These seminars focus on continuing medical education.

uWISE Online
The APGO Undergraduate Web-Based Interactive Self-Evaluation (uWISE) exam was developed to help medical students acquire the necessary basic knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology, regardless of future medical specialty choice. The quizzes are also an excellent tool to help prepare for the NBME ob-gyn subject exam and national licensure examinations.

The uWISE questions are based on and linked to the 8th edition of the APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives. Each quiz represents one Objective and contains 10 questions for each Objective. Reports on student performance and comparisons to the national mean are automatically e-mailed twice a year, in January and June.

Access to the quizzes is through a department subscription. Click above for information on how to subscribe, to view a sample quiz or a sample report, or to examine ways that students and faculty can utilize the uWISE questions. Please note: It may take up to 3 business days to process your id and password.

The Ob-Gyn Clerkship: Your Guide to Success
The APGO Undergraduate Medical Education Committee has compiled a booklet, titled The Ob-Gyn Clerkship: Your Guide to Success, to help medical students get the most from their Ob-Gyn clerkship. Included are tips on what to do - and what not to do - to learn most effectively during their clerkship experience.

Included are sections on: The Ob-Gyn Experience; Obstetric Services; Gynecology Services; Professionalsm; Practical Tools for the Clerkship; and Ob-Gyn as a Career Choice.

The PDF resource is free-of-charge by clicking on the above link.

Practical tools for the clerkship are highlighted within this resource, and have been assembled for medical student use. They can be also found under For Medical Students.

APGO Online Residency Directory for Medical Students
Please be sure that your medical students are aware of APGO's online residency directory. The directory provides data from hundreds of institutions to help medical students and their advisors select the ob-gyn residency that best fits their career objectives.

Each program is evaluated by curriculum, medical school affiliation, program size, faculty, benefits and much more, providing answers to commonly asked questions about potential residency programs.

Please ensure your medical students are aware of the site by printing out this PDF flyer and posting it in your student lounge.

Medical Student Recruitment "Playbook"
The APGO Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC) has compiled 59 recruiting ideas to assist in attracting more medical students to the specialty of ob-gyn. Each idea is expressed in a standard format with a specific target audience. It is hoped that some of the ideas will prove applicable to your particular situation and institution.

The Effective Preceptor Series
The 10 pamphlets in the APGO Effective Preceptor Series provide preceptors with practical tools for teaching and evaluating students. The easy-to-read pamphlets are also valuable across disciplines and are available for free downloading as well as purchase.

Promoting Clinical Excellence
This booklet is designed to provide teachers with concepts, options and methodology to actively teach and evaluate clinical skills, as well as offer encouragement and inspiration.

APGO Women's Health Competency Project Offers Two Resources
Women's Health Care Competencies for Medical Students: Taking Steps to Include Sex and Gender Differences in the Curriculum is available on the Web site in PDF. Each APGO member department received a free copy of the printed document.

The Competencies has also been placed on this Web site in a searchable format as a women's health online curriculum builder, which allows users to build a curriculum, called MyCurriculum, from learning objectives they select - similar to adding items to an online shopping cart.

The site is open to the public.

APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives, 8th Edition
The newly revised 8th edition of the APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives is now available online as a member benefit to APGO member and institutional departments who have paid their annual dues. All faculty in paid member departments have access.

To develop this major revision, the APGO Undergraduate Medical Education Committee edited the 7th edition to ensure coverage of significant additions and changes in the field. They then linked each objective to the level of competence a student should be expected to achieve, the best methods of evaluation and the representative general competency as defined by the ACGME.

As a clerkship director, you can modify these objectives, if needed, to emphasize various aspects of the discipline, since one book cannot serve the needs of all courses.

Hard copies are available: single copies are $20 members; $30 nonmembers. There is a discount for multiple copies ordered.

Women's Healthcare Education Resource Network
The APGO Women's Healthcare Education Resource Network is a clearinghouse of information displaying model curricula, links and educational resources related to women's health education.

AAMC Task Force Findings on Clinical Skills Education of Medical Students
As part of a project to improve the clinical education of medical students, the AAMC convened a task force on clinical skills education in June 2003 with representatives from the seven national clerkship organizations, the Alliance for Clinical Education and the American Academy on Physician and Patient. The AAMC has just published the consensus recommendations of the task force.

The consensus document contains six specific recommendations for developing explicit clinical skills curriciulum for medical students. The purpose of the document is to facilitate a more explicit approach to the development of clinical method performance ability on the part of medical students, and to inspire educators in their commitment to this essential element of physician competency. Click above to obtain a copy of the document.

The task force's next steps include consensus development regarding preclinical skills education and faculty development.

Clerkship Directors' Listserv
The Brown University Acad Ob-Gyn Listserv is an e-mail forum to facilitate discussions regarding all facets of resident and medical student ob-gyn education. Topics may include anything pertaining to these issues, ranging from course content, complying with ROC guidelines, information concerning purchase of supplies (ie, PDAs), electives, etc.

There is no charge for participation. Job postings and other advertisements are not accepted. Participation is open to anyone with an interest in this area and may include MDs, PhDs, and other educators. Acad ObGyn started in 2000 and has 350 members. The collective expertise of the listserv members and its success will be an important resource for clerkship directors.

This is a managed list, which means that the administrator reviews each message prior to posting to ensure its appropriateness. As an automated listserv, any mail sent to this address by any member of the listserv will be automatically sent by the List Processor to all members. Any personal notes intended solely for another individual should be sent directly to that person's e-mail address.

To join or leave the list or to submit postings, click on http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/acadobgyn.html.
